Chapter 1. Crunch time.

After three years it had come to this, Sam sitting alone in this cold divorce court, listening to her husbands lawyers argue that she deserved nothing, as she had contributed nothing to the marriage and the judge was certainly sympathetic to the husbands arguments.

The judge listened to what the husbands lawyers said and never at anytime addressed Sam until the end and he asked if she wanted to comment, she said that she had nothing to say, so the judge ruled that Sam should get $50,000 and the husband would get everything else and that was that, the marriage was over.

Sam felt angry and sad as she left the court room, her ex-husbands father walked over to her and said. “Sam, I will need your bank details and I will transfer you the money.”

Sam stopped and reached into her purse and took out a card where she had written her bank details and she said, “Brian, you must be happy, now your son can find a woman who can have a baby.”

Please, lets not argue, this is not a happy time, I am sorry Sam, good luck with your future.”

Sam looked at him and did not answer, she looked across at her ex-husband and he seemed very upset as he walked out of the building with his mother.

Sam took a deep breath and a tear came into her eye as she remembered how she felt when Paul placed the wedding ring on her finger, she thought they would be together forever, she left the court building, it was a beautiful sunny day outside as she walked to the train station to go home to her mothers house.

Sam had been living with her mother since the separation, as her husband was paying the rent on her studio and after the breakup he refused to do it any longer, so Sam had to pack up everything and go to her mothers home and put her studio in the garage.

Sam’s mother was very supportive and loved having her daughter home with her, she had been quite lonely since the passing of her husband and it was wonderful that she now had someone to look after again.

Three days later Sam checked her bank balance and was pleasantly surprised to see that $100,000 had been transferred into her account, Sam smiled and thought, something good has finally happened after all the tears of the last two years.

Later she checked her emails and there was an email from Brian, “Hi Sam, Paul asked me to send you $100,000 so you have a chance to get on your feet. All the best for your future.”

Sam and her mother were sitting on the back verandah in the warm, late, summer evening, chatting and enjoying a glass of white wine and Sam told her mother about the money.

That’s wonderful darling, what are your plans?”

Mum, I want to leave Sydney and go overseas and paint, I am getting nowhere here, people just do not like my work, so I thought even if no one likes my work overseas, I get to see another country and experience their traditions.”

That is certainly a plan dear, where are you thinking of going?”

Sam smiled. “Remember George, who is married to John, well John is in the diplomatic corps and they have been stationed in Seoul, South Korea and they have offered to help me settle in over there, what do you think?”

Sam’s mother frowned and said. “But you don’t know the language dear, and it snows in the winter, how will you handle that?”

I will try and learn the language and deal with the cold, mum I really need to get away and forget the past three years and have a wonderful adventure.”

I will support you in whatever you decide to do, when are you thinking of going?”

George said to come in spring time, so I am settled in before winter comes, I am planning to go in early May, I will buy tickets this week and start to decide what I will take with me, I am very excited to go and find a new life.”

I will miss you dear, I have enjoyed having you here with me, but I know you have to move on after all the heartbreak of the last three years.”

The next two weeks were hectic and Sam finally decide what she would take, unfortunately she could not take much art equipment with her, other than a sketch book some pencils, watercolours and oil pastels, she had done a search on the internet and there were many art supply stores in Seoul, so getting new supplies would not be a problem.

The big day had come and Sam kissed her mother goodbye and caught a taxi to the airport, she steeled herself for the hassle of checking in, immigration and security.

She finally was through it all and arrived at the gate, she felt worn out already and the journey had just begun, there was lots of people milling around waiting just like Sam to board the aircraft.

Sam leaned up against a wall and she could feel the cold concrete against her skin as she waited for the gate to open, so she could board the plane, it would be a very long flight, over ten hours and Sam was mentally preparing herself for the hours of boredom in economy class, just sitting beside a stranger and staring at the seat in front of her.

The flight was bearable, the woman beside her was friendly and she was also going to Seoul to live, she worked for a marketing company and they were opening an office in Seoul and she was helping to put it all together.

It was announced that they would be landing soon and Sam despite being tired from the boredom and the uncomfortable seat, was very excited to start her new adventure.

After she passed through immigration, she collected her luggage and passed through customs and she went out into the large common area in the terminal where lots of people were waiting for their loved ones.

Sam saw the smiling face of George as he walked over to her, they embarrassed and he took her luggage off her and said. “It’s so good to see you Sam, how was the flight?”

Long, I am glad I am here and I can start a new adventure, life has been pretty crappy.”

Well, put all that behind you, it’s time to live and have the adventure of a lifetime, our van is over there.”

He pointed to a black van and a man was standing at the back waiting to put Sam’s suitcase in the back, Sam and George were seated in the van and they headed for George’s home.

John is working and will not be home until six, we can have a long talk and you can tell me your plans.”

Sam smiled at him and remembered what a good friend George had been to her during the messy breakup, before they left for Seoul.

I am looking forward to catching up on all your news and what it is like to live here?”

They chatted about life in Seoul and finally arrived at the home of George and John, it was a bungalow style house, not large, though very comfortable and George showed Sam to their guest bedroom, where she could stay until she found a place of her own.

John walked in at six and he and Sam chatted as George prepared their dinner.

The food was very good and the three of them sat down after dinner with a glass of wine and chatted about Sam’s future.

John asked. “Where do you want to live Sam, here in Seoul?”

Sam pushed her hair behind her ears and said. “No, after Sydney I would like to go out into the countryside, not to far from Seoul as I still need art supplies, do you guys have any suggestions?”

John said. “Not really, one of the men I work with is married to a Korean woman, she is very lovely and I am sure she would help.”

That would be great, when could I see her?”

I will will ring him and see when we could set up a meeting.”

John took out his phone and walked out of the room and a few moments later he came back into the room and said. “She would be happy to see you tomorrow at ten, George knows where she lives, so your adventure is about to begin.”

Suelin greeted Sam and George with a big smile as they entered her home and Sam explained what she wanted and Suelin said. “I grew in an area just outside of Seoul, about an hours drive, it is a beautiful area with lots of little farms, a peaceful lake and a village, we should drive out there and see what's available.”

That sounds perfect, when are you available to go?”

I am like George, there is very little we can do as our husbands work for the government and the government prefers that we don’t work, so lets plan for not tomorrow, but Thursday?”

George said. “That’s good, then Thursday it is and we will pick you up at nine.”

They all chatted on for some time and Suelin told Sam of all the pitfalls of country living, especially as very few people out there speak English and she should work hard at learning the language, otherwise it could be a difficult experience.
