Chapter 2.

Chapter 2. Thursday.

They picked up Suelin at nine and started their journey out into the country side, Seoul was like all big cities lots of traffic and very busy, people rushing everywhere, finally they reached the city limits and the traffic started to thin out.

Sam could see mountains and hills in the distance, it really was a lovely drive and Sam felt very excited to see this area that Suelin had described.

Suelin said. “Once we get over those hills in front of us we will go into the valley I told you about.”

As they drove over the hills the valley spread out before them and you could see the farms and the sparkling lake, it was beautiful with the stunning mountains in the distance.

Sam smiled and said. “It is all you said it would be, it is beautiful.”

They entered the village and started looking for some real estate offices, they found one and Suelin went to talk to them, she came out and said. “They have nothing, but they said there was two more at the end of the street.”
Suelin went into both of them and came out and said. “They have nothing available, they did say there was a very small real estate office just down the road, who may have something.”

They eventually found the office and Suelin went in and a few minutes later she walked out with a woman and introduced her to Sam and George.

She spoke English and said. “My name is Nelly and I have two place for rent, one is small cottage in the village and the other is a small farm on the outskirts of the village, would you like to see them?”

Sam said. “Yes I would.”

Wait, I will get the keys and shut my shop.”

Once Nelly was in the van they drove to the first cottage, it was nice, unfortunately there was nowhere for Sam to work, Sam was starting to think she was out of luck.

The van stopped outside of a small stone cottage set among beautiful trees and attached to the house was a large shed, it certainly looked promising, as they walked towards the front door Sam noticed that the ground was very soft and she could smell the dampness in the air.

Nelly unlocked the front door and they all entered the house, it smelt of fresh paint, it was not a big house, you were immediately in the kitchen and sitting area, there was a table and four chairs, on the wall were cupboards and an electric stove under them, a bench ran along the front wall and it had a sink and faucet and under it were cupboards.

There were two doors further inside the house, Sam walked over to one door and turned the doorknob and went into a small bedroom with a single bed, a small chest of draws with a tall wardrobe.

She opened the other door to see the bathroom, it was very simple, a shower and a small sink and a toilet, clean and newly painted.

The home was very clean and Nelly explained that it came furnished, she said an old man owned the building and he had passed away in a nursing home and the son, who is a successful business man did not want to sell the building, so he had it repaired and renovated and made it available for rent.

Nelly led them over to the side of the building where she opened the door that led into the attached shed, she told them that the old man used to sharpen knives, axes and anything that needed sharpening in the shed, at the front of the shed were large doors that could open to allow the old mans customers to enter.

Sam noticed that the concrete floor had been cleaned and the smell of fresh paint was strong, she liked the large shed with it’s tin roof and exposed wooden beams and said. “This is perfect, how much is it?”

Nelly said. “In your money, it is three hundred dollars a month, one month deposit and six months advance, are you interested?”

Sam smiled and said, “Yes, very interested.”

Alright I will ring Mr Kim, what will you be doing here, he will want to know?”

I am an artist and I want to paint here and hopefully exhibit in Seoul.”

An artist, that sounds exciting, let me go and ring him.”

Sam looked around and saw that there was enough furniture for her as she was not expecting any guests, only George and there were four chairs, all she needed was a fridge and a new mattress and of course pots and pans, and a couple of plates.

Nelly came back into the shed and said. “Mr Kim, has agreed and after six months he has agreed to another year, if you are interested, we can go back to my office and you can sign the papers.”

Sam smiled and said. “Yes, I would like to do that.”

Nelly’s office was not large and had lovely Korean posters covering the walls, Sam sat down to read the contract, but it was in Korean, so Suelin read it and said. “It’s a simple contract Sam, you just need to sign here and here.”

Sam signed the papers and Nelly asked. “Sam when will you send the money?”

As soon as we get back to Seoul, I will send the seven months rent, can you give me the bank details.”

Not a problem, this is the bank account.”

She handed Sam the paper and said. “Sam, there are a few people in the village who speak English and I will introduce you to them, the doctor and the pharmacist both speak English, so does the manager of the supermarket, if you do have any problems just come and see me and I will help you.”

Thank you Nelly, I appreciate your help.”
“Also, my husband has a trucking business and anything you need to come here from Seoul, he can do it for you, alright I will give you the keys when I see you next.”

Thank you Nelly for all your help, I will see you again soon.”

On the drive back to Seoul they all talked about the things Sam needed to buy and where she could get them, Sam was so excited to get out into the countryside and start creating.
