Barnett Newman paintng.

My thoughts on the Barnett Newman painting.

“NEW YORK -- A large 1953 painting by abstract expressionist artist Barnett Newman has sold for $43.8 million at a New York City auction, setting an auction record for his work.
Sotheby's said Tuesday the record price for "Onement VI" (WUHN'-mehnt siks) includes the buyer's premium.
The painting is the last of six in Newman's Onement series. They're characterized by what's called the zip, a distinctive stripe running down the center of the canvas. Four are in museum collections.”

I was reading all the comments today in some Artist group pages on Facebook, about the Barnett Newman painting that was just sold at auction for $43.8million. A very large sum of money for a painting that is blue with a white line through the middle of it, they said.
Now so many people, Artists, ridiculed the painting and said lots of cruel things about it and the price that was paid for it and the person who bought it. This really amazed me as I am sure these are the same people who would be so offended if someone was to criticize their work so harshly.
The lesson here, be careful what you say, you will reap, what you sew.
So what do I think about this painting?
I think that it is wonderful, fantastic and as many adjectives I could think of.
Just like I think Rothko, Pollack and all the other Abstract Expressionists are so good.
Why do I think that?
Because they broke the mold they were prepared to go outside the box and do something new and revolutionary, to do things that others were not prepared to do. They were trailblazers.
We look back at them with the eyes of knowing, but when they painted these paintings they were absolute revolutionaries, defying what Art is and the Art establishment.
How can a blue canvas with a white line down it, which was called a “zip,” be called Art?
It is Art, very expensive Art now.
Yes anyone could do it. But they didn't.
Yes I could paint my wall blue and get they same effect. But I didn't.
Do you see what I am saying?
They did it.
They were the first to do it, no one had done this before them.
Just like Pollack?
Kids can do it, anyone can do a drip painting but before him, no one had done it, he was the first and that's what makes these paintings so wonderful.
Bartlett Newman's Zip paintings were the first paintings to be painted this way. They deserve the recognition they have received, just like Rothko and Pollack and all the others.
Is it worth $43.8 million?
Yes?
Very simply the market decided it was, and whether you agree or not does not change the fact that this painting was sold for $43.8 million.
Please don't tell me your child could do it, yes they could but they didn't do it first, Bartlett Newman did.
I was saddened by the remarks made by Artists who should know better, yes they were just expressing their opinion and yes they have the right to do that, but do not be offended when your work gets criticized.
There is so much Art out there now that is technically good but lacks imagination, creative instinct and vision. We seem to be condemned to just repeat the same old stuff continually, another landscape, another pet painting another celebrity painting all well done but have already been done. I long for the next Rothko, the next Newman or the next Pollack who comes out of nowhere and challenges the very foundation of what we call Art.
I applaud these men for what they did and I am ever watching for the next group of Artists who come along to challenge what we call Art and again change the Art world forever.
I do believe we see a new Art movement come out of the melting pot of Asia as it gradually gets bolder and the revolutionaries come forward to challenge what we call Art.
Let me know your thoughts on the painting and my written piece?
Imagine more?
