Your miracle #1.
First, pre-exhibition.
“ The miracle is in the doing.”
What do I think an Artist should do to avoid a failed Art exhibition?
Now if you knew that doing all that work would produce a failed exhibition, surely you would do it very differently from the beginning?
So instead waiting to lick your wounds after the exhibition why not start out with a plan to try and make sure that does not happen and the show is a success.
Lets start from the pain part first, no sales and a lot of money and time invested into a failed show, plus dealing with the emotional aspect of failure.
You are the key to your success.
So do not rely on the Gallery or someone else to promote your work, you do it, you have so much invested here, so you make sure it is done.
Artist you need to push yourself so hard on the Internet through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, emails, because you have only one shot at an opening night so give it your best.
Blog about your opening weeks before, talk about the paintings that will be available, tell the story behind each one, people love to know the back story. Now the blogs do not have to be long, but make them interesting and chatty, put them up on Facebook and email them to supporters.
Do videos of your paintings and of you in your studio and let them see where it all happens, people love to see where the Artist works and creates their wonderful paintings. Invite the people to the opening night on every video you make and on every email you send out.
I am personally sold on blogs and videos so do them and get them out there for people to see and connect with you.
Do emails to all your friends and contacts at least three times a week in the month leading up to your opening night, with photos and stories about your new paintings.
The emails do not have to be long stories, you can use your blogs, just short reminders about the coming opening send it to all your friends and collectors, put links to your videos and blogs in the emails. There is a better click through rate on links using emails than with a web page, because it is simple and easy to do.
Make videos of you packing the paintings to go to the gallery and before the opening night show the hanging process of your paintings in the gallery and talk about it, be excited, engage people in the process up until opening night.
People love to feel part of the process, it connects them to you.
I know you are tired but all this preparation is for opening night and remember you only get one opening night each exhibition so give it your best, you can rest when its all over.
Be interesting, be chatty and friendly in your videos and do the work, this is giving value to your supporters.
Tomorrow part 2.
