Money?
Of
course all Artists want to sell their Art and make money, and I
encourage Artists to learn as much about selling and running a small
business as they can.
These
are necessary things to do and we need to sell our Art to live but
that is not your calling to make money, if you are a true Artist you
are called to create new and original work.
The
money is a nice side benefit if you sell.
If
Vincent van Goth had painted for money he would have given up after a
year or two, he would never have persevered like he did, believing in
his call more than the need to sell.
Yes
he wanted to sell but that was not his motivating force.
Picasso
made a lot of money selling Art, he became a millionaire, yet he kept
painting, why?
He
did not need the money but he kept creating when he no longer needed
to earn to survive, he kept working on his Art and by the end of his
life he was buying back his own work.
Both
these men one rich and one poor, both keep creating Art.
You
see these men were called, they saw destiny in what they were doing,
not money.
They
had to paint, they had to create, they were compelled to do so.
Neither
poverty nor wealth stopped them from fulfilling their calling to be
an Artist.
Both
created a big catalogue of work, Picasso and Van Goth, they needed no
guidance, no sign posts they just followed the leading of the muse
and their work is recognisable as theirs and never mistaken for
another’s.
That
is what being an Artist is all about, creating a body of work over a
lifetime, it is not about the wealth or the poverty, it’s about the
Art and creating your own original Art work.
