It is a marathon not a sprint.

Artist, you must be in the Art business for the long haul, it is a marathon not a sprint.
Yes you will not make much money in the early years but if you stick at it and keep selling your original paintings to strangers and they become collectors then your prices will begin to rise.
Of course your collectors want their investment in your work to increase in value, so it is in their interest to promote you, be at your openings and talk about you, word of mouth is still the best promotion you can get.
Relationship with your collectors leads to friendship and life long collectors of your work, it takes time and work to build these relationships, so don’t be impatient.
It may take 10years to get well known and then you will no long have calculate your price as you will just state how much you want for your paintings.
In time you will have learned the Art Business and what the market will tolerate and as long as you are not too greedy you can earn a very good living by your brush.
This is a business and like all businesses you struggle for the first few years and as you get known and popular, so your business grows and your prices increase.
The reason so many Artists start out and then after a few years give up is because they perceive that their work is no good because they can not sell it and they leave and stop painting.
They equate that the lack of sales is because of the quality of the work but the truth is not that at all, the work may be brilliant, original, wonderful work but you are unknown, no body knows you.
This is the problem not the work, build a network of people around you and your work, get known, do videos, blog and story tell your paintings.
Get known this must be one of your three priorities, paint lots of work, learn about being a small business and promote and market yourself and your Art.
You are your Art and you need to be as well known as your paintings.
Be patient, it’s a marathon.
