The new normal.

The game has changed for us all, Artists today are facing a new Art Business model.
In the years past the Art Business was very much controlled by the Gatekeepers, the major galleries, Auction houses and collectors and dealers. These people made Artists famous and it was a very elite crowd, they did not allow many to enter into the club.
Since the early 2000's this has changed completely and the old model is broken, yes these groups are still out there but their influence has shrunk because of the internet and it has allowed the Artist like never before to take control of their careers and build them as they want to, ignoring the old model.
This has been hard for many Artists to come to grips with as the old way was how it was always been done, now we have a time in history were there is no gatekeeper and you can take complete responsibility for your Art Business. In the old model we had to go to the newspapers and magazines to get our Art published, we had to try and get tv stations to show our work and this was hard and fleeting exposure but now in this new age we can take control of this.
If you want to write your own blog you can, be your own newspaper you can tell your own story about your Art, one can stop you.
If you want to make videos about your Art you can and ignore the tv stations, just start your own tv show and put it up on the internet for all to see, you can do this now it is a new world.
This is the new reality, you want to start a gallery you can, put your work up on Facebook, Art groups, and all the different Art sites selling art on the internet and your own web site, all this you can do and control your life.
It has never been like this before for Artists.
Now with all this new freedom and different business models we are all learning that selling on the internet is not like hanging a painting in a gallery and waiting for a buyer to come along. Now we are connecting more with people, building relationships with them and becoming friends and them telling others about us brings the sale.
Word of mouth is the new, old method of selling, the old and tried method, people talking to people and telling them about your paintings. This is much slower than the old interruption selling method that tv, newspapers, magazines and radio have employed for more than 50years. These old platforms are dying, we don't watch the adds any more everyone is looking at their phones, so selling and marketing has had to change and as of yet no one has come up with a way to put mass market interruption selling to everyone on the internet like it did on tv.
The new marketing is connecting to people reaching out to others, people talking and sharing what they have heard with others, building relationships and turning them into friendships.
The same business principles apply, supply and demand, but the selling process is totally changing. We are connecting with people and building relationships which will be long term relationships and through the trust in that relationship sales will come.
It will be connecting with strangers, building trust and friendship and word of mouth, that will turn into sales.
The game has changed forever because of the internet and every Artist is now a Gallery owner if they choose to be.
