New skills we need.
“Regardless of what trade or profession you're in, you have to sell yourself and your skills... and that includes artists.”
I
read
this in a trade journal and I thought how true it is. We are all
selling ourselves and our skills all the time. To survive as an
Artist or a baker we have to make sales. Everyone unless they are
supported is faced with this question, I must sell.
Even
the person who has a 9 to 5 job is selling their time and skills to
their boss in return for a wage.
So
we as Artists must understand the reality of the new Art
world
we live in
where
the internet has disrupted the Art business to such a state that
Galleries are no longer the gate keepers and Artists can go directly
to their customers and sell.
In
the old days Artists and collectors were kept apart by the Galleries
so they
controlled
the sale and earned their commission but in this world we live in
today where Galleries are slowing closing we have to now deal one on
one with our customers and
it
is not going to change and we need to get the necessary skills to
navigate this new Art world.
Artists
spend so much on Art supplies, framing and going to workshops on how
to get new Art skills but so few consider the fact that the new
skills they need are how to sell.
All
these skills are available to be learned for free on the internet.
You can do tutorials on selling and watch videos by the best sales
teachers in the world for free.
There
are sales courses you can do that will help in social media selling
and face to face selling all available for
free or at little cost
on the internet.
I
was saying to an Artist friend this morning I wish all this
information was available when I started in this business it would
have saved a lot of tears.
Artists
you live in the greatest time in all history for Artists, no
gatekeepers and you can reach out to the whole world and build a
following and sell your Art.
It
is just a matter of learning a new skill and doing it, remember the
secret is that there is no secret and it will not happen if you don’t
do it.
