Your “signature” style?
So
many Artists get locked into a "signature" style because of
success.
Success
is not good for some Artists because it
causes them
to repeat their best sellers and then they
seem to
plateau and
every painting becomes variation of the one before it.
Many
think that maturity is when your “signature” style is
recognizable, I disagree, I want the Artist to be recognizable as
“The Artist” so then your Art works can change and
your can experiment.
Galleries
want you to have a “signature” style because they can sell lots
of repeats of your best sellers, it
stops being creative and becomes purely commercial.
The
great contemporaneity Artists just kept evolving and doing
new and exciting work, always looking for change.
You don't want your style to be well known you want you The Artist to be well known, then you are free to create whatever you want and the market will follow The Artist.
You don't want your style to be well known you want you The Artist to be well known, then you are free to create whatever you want and the market will follow The Artist.
Maturity
for an Artist is
not a “signature” style
it's the courage
to always embrace
innovation and experimentation.
