The wind of change is blowing.

The recurring theme I find my self talking to Artists about the most of late is how our business has changed so much and how we have to adapt to this new day.
We live in an age or better a time of revolution, like the Industrial revolution, that is changing the world so fast.
The internet has changed our lives and many are now connected to it 24/7 through their phones.
As I was thinking this morning I could see a day when we are somehow connected into the internet permanently, not sure how but I believe it will happen, maybe through our phones when they become part of our hand or arm. Science fiction stuff I know, but I remember when you could only buy music on vinyl, now you can download it free off the internet, the changes that we have already seen are quite amazing and there will be so much more to come.
So our industry has changed and continues to change.
Once most Art was sold through Galleries and Auctions, today a lot of Art is sold through Artists connecting with buyers on line and selling direct to them cutting out the middle man, Galleries and dealers. Yes Galleries still sell Art but they are slowly dropping down the food chain as Auctions and large Art Fairs take the customer away from the Gallery.
Artists now not only need to be good at their craft they need to be business people as well. They need to be able to sell and market their product as the buyer increasing connects directly with them.
People laugh at me and say that there will always be Art Galleries but we thought that there would always be music stores and book shops but so many of them have been made redundant by the internet.
If Art Galleries and many Artists do not change and adapt to this new day then many will go the way of Motorola and Nokia, Borders books and the record industry, were these bad businesses, no, it is just that the world changed and they didn't, times are a changing.
I do believe that the successful Artist of the future will be an Entrepreneur, they will be the complete package, they will produce the work and sell and market it to the public and if you want to be romantic about being an Artist then remember the Motorola phone. It was state of the ark, now it does not exist.
The wind of change is blowing.
Artists need to really understand the changes taking place, will it happen over night, no, but maybe it will only take a few years.
Artists need to consider continued education in disciplines that they were once told they did not need to learn, selling, marketing, public speaking and professional development.
It is time to learn and grow, adapt and change.
