Taking responsibility.

There are many Artists who cross my path and I am always interested to learn what motivates them and makes then unique. I meet the very successful Artists earning a good living by the brush and those who struggle to even buy supplies.
What is it about the Artist who is able to break through and get into the big time?
Often it is not great talent or mastery, but that they conform to the fashions of the day, the whims and likes of collectors and the public.
I thought of the great Masters of the past who did not achieve fame and fortune in their time but today they are remembered as greats and others who were more popular in their day are forgotten, isn't that interesting?

Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh are two prime examples of achieving great fame, yet in their life times walked against the norm and painted as they felt led to paint, not needing the acclaim of the fashionable elite, they did not need their approval or permission to paint what they painted.
They are certainly part of a unique group that can stay true to their dreams and beliefs and walk against the fashion of the day.
So my friends, if you seem to be swimming against the tide and people do not like your work even though you believe it is great work, then you are in good company.
The reality is you do not need approval or permission to paint your paintings, you just need to believe in yourself.
You see we have been told since we were children that we need approval and permission and it is a lie, because if you have self belief then you do not need others approval or permission and if you don't have their approval and permission it that does not mean you are wrong.
It means you are giving yourself the approval and permission to paint your paintings exactly like you want to, original and beautiful work.
Be your own judge as to whether you have done well or not, don't hand that to others.
Do not seek approval or permission, give it to yourself and you will be a happier and stronger person, because you are taking responsibility for you and your paintings and your Art career.
Satisfy yourself, not the fashion of the day, be a trailblazer doing original new Art, give yourself approval and permission to be yourself.
