These are skills that all Artists can learn.



As we approach 2018 I have thought long about what are the important things that an Artist can do to build their careers.
Most will say it’s great talent and craftsmanship, but to me the most obvious things that I would tell a young Artist is first learn to sell your work.
Do not rely on others to do it for you, learn to do it yourself.
Selling is a learned skill that everyone can learn and put into practice in their Art career.
The second thing is learn to be a public speaker, this will give you confidence and poise in front of strangers. So many Artists are unable to stand up in front of people and talk about their work, this is a skill you can learn and it will be a very valuable skill for your future career.
Artists need to influence strangers because these are the people who will buy your paintings and make you successful, not family and friends.
The way we influence strangers is to have the confidence and poise to walk up and talk with them and help them make the decision to buy our paintings.
Knowing that you can confidently talk with strangers and influence them to buy, overcomes the ability of the thief to rob you of sales.
It is fear that stops most Artists from selling.
These are skills that all Artists can learn and the impact on their careers would be amazing.

Why don't people want to pay what my art is worth?

                                               Why don't people want to pay what my art is worth? I keep reading on an artists group pages again and again the same old question, “ I cannot sell my art for what it is really worth?” This is always a question raging in the art world, sort of the never ending question. Your weakest skill, sets the height of your success. If you don't know your best skill, you had better find out your weakest skill, because its the weakest skill that holds you back. As Artists we so often coast along depending on our strongest skills to get us through, never realising that it is the weakest skills that hurt us the most. Now I have learned what not to do, because as an Artist I never did this but after years in Galleries I wish I had, it was a weak skill that determined the height of my success.
