Few thoughts about your studio practice.
I
was asked this question?
“How
do I deal with visitors who come to my studio?”
First
make it a policy when someone wants to visit your studio, that it is
by appointment only.
If
you just let people come at any time you will find it an intrusion
and people will abuse the privilege, especially family and friends.
Many
people think that because most Artists work at home that they are
able to chat at any time, many do realise that you are working in you
studio and you must call it that, work.
Make
sure people understand that this is your work space.
Second
sometimes
it can
be a bit difficult trying to work out the intentions of the visitor,
especially
if they are a stranger.
Often
they will want to photograph your work, before
you let them photograph your work ask them what will they use the
photograph
for?
An
Artist friend allows
photos but insists that he is photographed
with the work and he makes sure he covers a little of it with his
body so it cannot be used.
Only
give out as much information as you would give out at a Gallery
opening, anyway its is good to keep the mystery of the making of
your art,
so story
tell the art
practice.
Do
not be afraid to ask
them if they are a collector, do they buy art if so, what sort?
Always
ask questions about
the person, people
love talking about themselves so get them talking, get
an email address and business card and phone number.
Do
not allow people to undervalue your work, because it is in the studio
therefore it should be cheaper, no it is still the same price as in
the Gallery.
Finally
it is important to make sure everyone knows your studio is your work
space and you are working, just like they do.
