Strive for excellence.

Artists must strive for excellence in what they do if they are going to change their world, not strive for applause.
There is nothing wrong with applause if we are getting it for excellence, giving the best value we can for the Art we are creating, this way the applause is the result of the value we have provided.
But to paint to be popular and if that is your true motive will never be lasting.
As I keep saying one of the biggest challenge each Artist must face is how to handle popularity?
Does one listen to all the praise and flattery and believe it and get a big ego or does one hear it and appreciate it and know that praise is fleeting and now we must go back to the studio and keep being productive and creative.
It takes a very mature head to understand that being popular is not what we are striving for but to produce wonderful, organic, original Art and recognise that the praise is just the result of the hard work, just like money.
Money and popularity are the result of producing wonderful Art work and if don’t keep producing new and original work after a while the praise will move on.
Many older Artists knew what success was like when they were younger and to be the darling of the Art world and they were seduced by it and believed that if they kept doing the same sort of work that the praise would go on forever, but it doesn’t and fashion gets tired of the same thing and it moves on and they are left behind wondering what changed.
The sad part is that many still believe the praise and adoration years and years on and still do the same work they were doing 20 years before believing that they will be recognised again for what they are doing, but sadly the party has moved on and they only have, “ What happened?”
The lesson for all Artists to learn is do not listen to the praise and adoration but listen to the Muse.
The back slappers and adoring fans are not the answer to a long sustainable career, producing wonderful, organic, original Art is, look at all the greats of history especially Picasso he constantly evolved and sort excellence in his Art.
Praise and adoration is nice and enjoy it when it comes but it is just smoke and it will blow away, your reality is in your creativity and doing excellent Art not in flattery.
Artists must always strive for excellence in what they are doing if they are going to change their world, not strive for applause.
Be the best Artist that you can be and produce the best original work that is totally yours always, that way you will have a long and sustainable career.
Listen to your Muse and strive for excellence in your Art practice.
