Don’t judge life by one failed event
I have said over and over again, life happens to us all. It rains on the happy and the sad, the rich and the poor, its called life.
So how do we cope when we have done all we can do to be a successful artist and it fails?
We have read the books, watched the videos, we learned to sell and market ourselves and we have learnt new artistic skills, but it did not work.
Our latest exhibition had no sales and we are devastated.
What do I do?
At this point you really have to decide if you are in it for the long haul or you are just going to give up, because really that is the only two choices that you have.
Go on or go back?
So if you decide that you are going to go on then failure is just another opportunity to start again. Now I could go on about all the great Artists and business people who had failed many times but just never gave up and were eventually hugely successful, but if you are hurting that will sound a little empty.
So first thing you have to do is decide that you will go on.
Second ask the question what small thing could I have done better that would have made a big difference. We usually know the answer to that question, so now we have a starting point.
You need to get over the blame game quickly because this is what the thief will use on you so you can make excuses to stay defeated.
Accept responsibility and go forward, do not blame anyone else or yourself but be responsible and be determined to learn what ever lessons are built into this defeat that you need to learn.
Go over everything that you did and prepared and see if you can find any reason for the failure, if not then you have no choice but accept it like the farmer.
His beautiful crop is ready, the best harvest he will have for years and a week before the harvests is taken off, a hail storm comes and wipes it out. No fault of his own, he did his best.
He put the best fertilizer in and he had a great crop worthy of all his hard work and dedication, but life came and got in the way. Total crop failure through no fault of his own, its life, it happens.
What does he do?
He immediately begins to prepare for next season, he cannot change what has happened, he must just accept it, it was no ones fault and he moves on.
Think about that, he blames no one, accepts responsibility as he knows what the weather can do but he has to risk it, total crop failure, he prepares for the next season and moves on.
That's what you must do, learn all the lessons we can from the experience and begin to prepare for the next season.
You cannot give up, we all know the vagaries of the Art market, we cannot control it, we take the risk, it did not work, remember you have invested so much in yourself and you are worth all the effort, now go forward, believe in yourself.
Finally you must get back to your routines of small disciplines make for big future changes and begin to work on yourself because next spring, your opportunity, will come and you must be ready to take advantage of it.
