Why buy that painting?
As
Artists we some times get hung up on small things and forget about
the major things. If you are a professional Artist then you need to
sell, you need to understand your Art market and learn to market your
original work into that market.
Many
painters look at the market and see what is selling and then copy
that or do something close to it and it sells, but this not Art, that
is factory work and that painter will soon be forgotten.
Art
is not about following the latest fashion or trend, it’s about
getting your original Art in front of strangers and connecting with
them building relationships and in time they buy your Art.
People
buy Art for basically one or two reasons.
First
there are those who are buying a signature and really have no
interest whether it is a painting they love or not, they are
collecting names.
The
second group of people which is our market buy for another reason.
They
buy because they want it.
As
Artists we spend to much time worrying about the wrong things that
most often the stranger is unaware of, people buy because they desire
something and then they want it, most just say I like that, I want it
and buy it.
We
still have to meet the stranger and connect with them and build a
relationship, but even all that does not guarantee a sale unless they
want the painting.
Of
course if you have done all I have said and they like you, then you
have a far greater chance of them liking your original painting and
then wanting it.
People
seldom buy because they need something, most buy because they want
something, they desire it.
That
is the emotion we want to arouse when they see our original
paintings.
If
they desire it, then they will want it and will buy it.
We
need to major on the relationship between you and the stranger, build
desire for your original painting by story telling it
enthusiastically and describe how much you love it, be emotional and
enthusiastic it’s contagious.
Always
be genuine, do not lie or exaggerate, people will see through that
quickly and you not only lose the sale but your credibility as well.
People
buy what they want because they desire it.
